Stars aim for place
Achieving a top-eight spot in the Absa Premiership is Free State Stars’ main focus. The ultimatum to achieve a top-eight standing is in the wake of their unexpected elimination in the Nedbank Cup tournament. Ea Lla Koto were outclassed by Mpumalanga Black Aces 1-0 in the competition over the weekend. For reaching the semi-final the home side will take a cool R1 million in prize money. Had they reached and lost in the final they were guaranteed R2,5 million with the overall winner taking R6 million. Despite the outcome of the cup, Stars’ mentor Kinna Phiri is determined to achieve a top-eight spot. “We are targeting to cement our position in the top-eight bracket in the Premiership. It is a matter of must for us having not succeeded in our mission to reach the final of the cup tournament. Our immediate focus is to ensure we finish among the eight top-seeded teams. If we achieve the goal Ea Lla Koto will automatically qualify for the competition to feature top finishers.” Phiri said attaining any position from fifth would be rewarding for his guns. The ambition to gun for any position above eight is also given the financial incentives. The teams finishing in the top-eight brackets are guaranteed the following financial incentives: 8th R1 million, 7th R1,1 million, 6th R1,3 million, 5th R1,5 million, 4th R2 million, 3rd R3 million, 2nd R5 million and 1st place R10 million. “To ensure a best finish in the Premiership we have to salvage full points in our remaining games. In achieving this, we need to be focused more than ever.”
