Harmony raises FS’s profile
The Harmony Aca?demy raised the province’s profile at this year’s Coca-Cola Football Stars event despite unsuccessful defending the championship. The Free State young guns lost 6-5 on penalties to Western Cape’s Cloetesville High in the final staged at the Matlosana Stadium in Klerksdorp. Harmony were favourites as they were defending the championship and had also participated in two previous events. Reaching the final is something worth celebrating for the Free State boys, who are now guided by another mentor. Harmony received the runner-up prize of R100 000, which will also be used to fund a school project of their choice. Harmony Academy’s coach, Hector Mokgadi, acknowledged that they lost to the best team on the day. “Cloetesville did their homework. They deserved to win. “However, we are proud of ourselves as we managed to reach the final of this competition as the defending champions. “This is something which other previous winners have failed to do,” said Mokgadi. Cloetesville, a soccer loving school with pupils from the poorer communities in the Western Cape, saw improvement this year. Last year the school finished sixth out of nine in the Coca-Cola Football Stars’ national championship. This year’s performance was the best against the defen?ding cham?pions. “We are very proud of this achievement, especially as nobody gave us a chance against a side of the calibre of Harmony. “However, we have proved that we can hold our own against them,” said Joubert. The victorious Cloetesville walked home with R150 000 in prize money. This will be used to fund a project at the school.
