Poetry in pictures
In an ironic twist of fate, Freedom Day (27 April) and Worker’s Day (1 May) follow on each other within 72 hours. It is like the Buddhist saying: “Before enlightenment: Chop wood and carry water. After enlightenment: Chop wood and carry water.” The flood of recent public holidays (in which most of our free people still have to work) has left me pondering the strangeness of our existence. I paged through my picture files and looked at the unspoken poetry of pictures I had taken in the Free State and Northern Cape that seldom make it to publication. They all have one thing in common – the indomitable human spirit and the various ways in which life expresses itself. Out of the stored files I randomly selected a few pictures that tell their own poetry. This is not a definitive collection, but a look through the lens at life and the pain and pleasure of living.
