The increased interest from Free State student designers in the National Vodacom Durban July Young Designer Award presented by Côte d’Or was reflected by a massive surge in entries for this years competition.

This resulted in record entries confronting the judges when the students from design colleges, technikons and universities across the region submitted storyboards of their designs, based on the theme It’s a shore thing.

The panel of judges shortlisted the semi-finalists from the storyboards submitted in each of the five regions competing in this year’s competition.

There is no doubt that the individual first prize of a week long trip to London to enjoy the London Graduate Fashion Week is also a massive motivator for the students.

Each student has to design a race day ensemble that is stylish, fashionable and encompasses the spirit of one of South Africa’s most prestigious events.

One of last year’s Bloemfontein regional finalists, Janine Jacobs from the Victoria Thoma Institute of Fashion, believes it is vital for aspiring designers to take part in events like the Vodacom Durban July Young Designer Award.

“It’s great to actually see how everything comes together and how it’s done in the life of an established designer,” said Jacobs.

“I was lucky enough to be one of the finalist last year which is now something I can add to my profile as an emerging designer,” she added.

Two finalists will be selected from regional semi-finals countrywide with the winners going through to the national final in Durban from 18 to 20 June.

The winner will be announced on the day of the Vodacom Durban July in Durban on 5 July, and will take home a cash prize as well as a week long trip to London to experience the 2009 Gra?duate Fashion week.

The semi-finalists from Bloemfontein are:

Cassandra Gunston; Cornelius du Preez; Carin Heyneke; Vusikhaya Cyprian Majale; Karli Vorster; Tsholofelo Mosidi; Sanet Wessels; Eunique Grotzinger; Ncinitwa Thandeka; Makali Mohanoe; Kim Robinson; Tasha Verwey; Mophosho Sannah; Amori Els; Xing (Leslie) Kang; Sharné van Ryne?veld; Stephanie Wulf and Chanelle Heyink.
