Free State Stars’ head coach Kinnah Phiri will remain with the team during the new season.

Recently it was rumoured that the Malawian would part ways with Ea Lla Koto at the end of this season to coach the Malawi senior national team.

The rumour followed the media reports indicating that he accepted a temporary position to coach Malawi’s senior men’s national side during the off-season.

Phiri’s first spell with Ea Lla Koto during the 2005-’06 season was brief and was characterized by challenges, given that the club was battling to avoid relegation. He was re-hired at the start of the current season and guided the team to the Telkom Knockout Cup semi-final only to lose 2-1 against Mamelodi Sundowns.

The club also qualified for the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup and lost 1-0 to Mpumalanga Black Aces during the weekend. Stars are also fighting hard to finish in the top eight spot in the Absa Premiership.

Phiri said his contract with Stars ended in 2010.

“We will see what will happen during the off-season. I cannot comment about the move as I am working for Stars,” Phiri said.

Rantsi Mokoena, Stars’ brand manager, however, confirmed to Express Qwaqwa that they would sign a coach next season to oversee the development of the team. He added that Phiri was not leaving the team. He said the fact that they would be signing another coach did not mean Phiri was leaving.

“Phiri will remain the head coach of the team.

“We recently appointed ex-Arcadia Shepherds, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates midfielder Sammy Troughton as our development head coach.

“However, he’s working with the senior team at the moment and Themba Sithole is responsible for our development,” Mokoena said.
