Freedom celebrated in FS
Scores of Free State residents gathered at the Charles Mopeli Stadium in Qwaqwa to celebrate Freedom Day on April 27. The stadium was packed to capacity during the celebration with Free State Premier Beatrice Marshoff, MEC for Sports, Art and Culture Elias “Ace” Magashule and Thabo Mofutsanyana District Mayor Msebenzi Zwane among the dignitaries who attended. During the celebration people were entertained by Mzwakhe Mbuli, Teboho and Friends, Paul Lechalaba and Masheleng. The function was organized by the Free State Department of Sports, Art and Culture. Magashule said they fought for freedom and that was why they were celebrating the day with confidence. He said he could not say much as the only thing they wanted for the day was to celebrate. Magashule said he was happy with the attendance of people especially schools and churches. Premier Marshoff said they were celebrating Freedom Day with a particular emphasis on social cohesion. She said they had a social responsibility to promote respect for national symbols such as the flag and the national anthem. “It is for this reason that throughout this year, we shall distribute our national flag to each and every household in the Free State. “We are the first to acknowledge that freedom will be meaningless if it does not express itself through an improvement in the people’s quality of life,” she said. She said freedom would always be measured in terms of whether or not there was an improvement in the living standards of people and continued by declaring on the day that indeed today was better than yesterday and that they were sure tomorrow would be better than today. “We declare to the people of the Free State that we shall continue to place them at the centre of our reconstruction and development efforts. We shall deepen the levels of consultation, accountability and feedback and therefore give practical meaning to democratic government,” Marshoff said. She said they would expedite the delivery of qualitative basic services and in the process empower them (residents of the province) to play an active part in the economic development of the province. Marshoff said next year the elections were coming and the people of the Free State would once again place their lives in the hands of the democratic government in spite of all the challenges. She said people knew that they had a government that would do all in its power to ensure that a better life for all was a reality.
