Campaign against abuse
In an effort to educate people about domestic violence and rape incidents, the Thusanang Advice Centre (TAC) in partnership with the Lusaka Men’s Forum (LMF) recently held an abuse awareness campaign at the Z.R. Mahabane School in Lusaka. Botha Komako, TAC’s community developer and member of the LMF, told Express Qwaqwa that the rife incidents of domestic violence and rape cases in Lusaka prompted them to embark on an education workshop. “Most of the cases we received from the Lusaka community are domestic violence and rape. This campaign aims to educate our men and boys about this monster,” Komako said. He said they wanted men’s opinions and input on how to combat that monster because according to their studies, men were the perpetrators of violence in most of these cases. He said the situation was exarcebated by the excessive use of alcohol. “We are appealing to men to change their behaviour,” he said. Insp. Johannes Malape of the Makoane Police Station said he was happy with the education campaign as it would help to combat crime in Lusaka. “Most of the protection orders are issued against men. “Some people abuse other people and do not realise they are actually abusing themselves because when the victim presses charges against their perpetrator, we as the police have to do what the law requires and arrest the perpetrators,” said Malape. Thabo Mokoena said he strongly felt that the community, especially the youth, could help educate the community about abuse and change the state of affairs.
