Coaches share expertise
A host of former top-level players of yesteryear, now coaching several teams in the Vodacom League, will be taking the challenge to guide their teams at the national play-offs in the North-West Province. The list of stars include Carlos das Neves (Hellenic), Leonard Ponoane (Bloemfontein Celtic and Free State Stars), Joel Mongalo (Real Rovers), Jerry Skhosana (Black Pool and Pirates), Gesond Vilakazi (Jomo Cosmos) and Nigel Dixon (Umtata Bush Bucks). Ponoane is in charge of Carara Kicks, Skhosana guides M Tigers, Das Neves leads Vasco da Gama, Mongalo is the mentor of Classic FC while Dixon is the coach of the Bush Bucks. They will use their experience to guide their teams to gain National First Division status. This year’s tournament will herald a new age for some of the clubs as they will try to climb their way back to the glory days of the past. Teams such as Bucks are on a mission to get back into top-flight soccer, while Vasco da Gama and Pretoria University both tasted Vodacom League national title success in 2002-’03 and 2003-’04 respectively. Vilakazi, who is at the helm of City of Matlosana FC, will try and exploit the home advantage and guide the club to National First Division. Their teams join the challenge for the honours at the play-offs to be held in Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp from 18 to 24 May. The matches will be played at the Ikageng Stadium in Potchefstroom and at the Matlosana Stadium in Klerksdorp with the final at the Ikageng Stadium on 24 May. “Vodacom is delighted to celebrate its 10th anniversary as a title sponsor of the Vodacom League and looks forward to a week of action-packed soccer in the North-West Province,” said Romeo Kumalo, Vodacom: executive director, commercial. Raymond Hack, Safa’s chief executive officer, said the national playoffs had entrenched itself as a much-looked-forward-to event on the South African soccer calendar, and added that the event played an important role in promoting, advancing, administering and encouraging the game of football. At last season’s play-offs in Qwaqwa, host club African Warriors beat Hanover Park in the final to lift the Vodacom League national title.
