A Businessman who had been found in possession of suspected stolen property was further charged with bribery after he had allegedly offered a South African Police Service (SAPS) officer a R15 000 bribe in exchange for not arresting him.

The incident occurred at about 20:00 last week Tuesday at Qalabotjha in Villiers.

The businessman (49) was investigated by the three police officers from Jeppestown in Gauteng. He is alleged to have bought stolen cigarettes worth R213 000 taken during a mock truck-hijacking at Keng-sington in Jeppestown earlier this month.

The police followed the information which led them to the suspect in Villiers in the Eastern Free State. The suspect was also found in possession of 60 2 kg bags of rice and it was suspected that the bags were also stolen.

He appeared before the Villiers Magistrate’s Court facing charges of possession of suspected stolen property and bribery.
