Project aims to create job opportunities
The Kroonstad Jewellery Cooperative (KJC) is a poverty alleviation project, which operates under the auspices of the Moqhaka Development Movement (MDM). The movement was formally established and launched in 2003. The main objective of the KJC is to primarily create approximately 150 sustainable job opportunities for the unemployed youth and women in Moqhaka and precincts by 2013. According to Mr Mahlomola Thateng, a senior management member of MDM responsible for education an media liason, the following areas have been earmarked for the project. Through a skills development programme, it is currently training 40 prospective jewellery makers, who mainly come from Maokeng. The next 40 trainees will be trained in January 2009. “We hope to include 15 from Steynsrus and 15 from Viljoenskroon respectively. The organisation is thankful for the support from the labour department and is once again appealing to the Moqhaka Municipality to also lend a helping hand in providing financial aid and a permanent working space,” Thateng said. The MDM felt it most proper and befitting to encourage women and youth to explore and pursue other fields such as glass blowing, paper making, ceramic and beads. Blacks never gained access and exposure to these fields before. The MDM further urges communities not to confine themselves to one praticular or specific formula of knowledge.
