Concert repeated after success
The people of Kroonstad can look forward to a repeat performance of the wonderful concert in the chapel of the Old Convent held at the time of the centenary celebrations in October last year. Spring seems to be the appropiate time for this auspicious event and 13 September has been confirmed with all concerned as the date. Two reasons for a repeat performance: The concert was a resounding success, with many overseas visitors saying that it could hold its own anywhere in the world. The concert was sold out last time, due to the many international and regional visitors and so, by popular request of many who were sorry to miss out, the concert will be performed again on Saturday, 13 September. The previous variety concert was a scintillating event, preceded by sherry in the foyer to the accompaniment of a melodious three- piece band, welcoming the patrons, and the emotional experience culmintaed in a trumpet solo from the gallery. This concert will take the best of the last performance and add some even more exciting items, for the following reason. The second reason is that the concert will again be a celebration. As in the show process of the restoration of the Convent, a new Allen Organ has just been installed in the chapel and the concert will be the official launch of this wonderful addition to the venue. This is all part of the ongoing programme to ensure that the Old Convent, run by Jala Peo Trust, becomes the successful multipurpose centre that Kroonstad deserves. A number of partnerships have already been forged, including one with the Ponahalo De Beer Community Trust, who will establish as SME Business Services Support Centre which will serve small business enterprises based in the municipal areas in the Northern Free State, known as the Fezile Dabi District. Another one is with Ashanti Silverworx, a women-based business in the trade of silversmithing which will provide classes in all the facets of the making of silver jewellery to women in Kroonstad. The beautiful chapel (with its new organ) is becoming popular for weddings, with the kitchen and gazebo convenient for receptions and other functions and other venues are available for courses, classes and other events. For more information and reservations, call Charlene Groenewald, coordinating administrator of the convent, 084-700-6219 or 056-213-1551 or call Deodie van Rooyen, an organist from Kroonstad, for demonstrations on the organ on 082-618-6397.
