Air show in Kby
The first air show since 2001 will be held at the Kimberley Airport in July. The organiser, Mr Johan Jooste, announced this during a launch at the Kimberley Airport. An Air Force Oryx helicopter from the 87 Helicopter Flying School in Bloemfontein, which will be part of the show, was also at the launch. The air show promises to be spectacular and will take to the skies at 08:30 on Saturday, 5 July, and will last until approximately 16:30. The experienced Lt. Col. Louter van Wyk of the South African Air Force (SAAF) will be the director. A thrilling display will be delivered by the Silver Falcons of the SAAF which last year celebrated its 40th anniversary. Scully Levin will be leading the team of Gabriel Pitt Specials and Brad Bennets will please the crowd in his Mazda Zoom Zoom. A Rooivalk attack helicopter, an Oryx and two Augusta 109 helicopters and a C47TP will be seen. The Bloemfontein Sky Diving Club will drop from the sky for a performance and world champion glider Laurens Goudriaan will show his talent. A crop spray and fire fighting demonstration will also be given. Known as Mr Airshow, Brian Emmenis will be there to keep the crowd informed and entertained. The Siyandiza Young Falcons will also attend a pass out parade here on this day. Promising Maths and Science learners in gr. 11 and gr. 12 would by then have attended a winter camp at the Bloemspruit Air Force base in Bloemfontein to introduce them to the Air Force as a possible career choice. Entrance to this event will be R40 per adult, R20 per learner and entry to pre-schoolers is free. Food will be on sale and no braai fires will be allowed. . The first ever public flying performance to be held in South Africa took place in Kimberley. The performance took place on 22 June 1911 at the Kimberley race course and was part of the British Crowning Ceremony celebrations. The first ever pilot training school was also in Kimberley. The first female pilot in the country was trained here and the South African Air Force had its first base in Kimberley.
