The Bishop of Kimberley and Kuruman, the Rt Rev. Oswald Swartz, presided and preached at Mass yesterday and unveiled a centenary plaque to mark the occasion, the dedication of its present building on 13 May a century ago.

On Sunday, 18 May, the Kimberley Children’s Choir will join the Cathedral Choir in a service of thanksgiving and praise.

The cathedral’s centenary was launched last year when Bishop Crowther came on a first return visit forty years after his deportation from Kimberley by the apartheid government in 1967. Other key events included visits by eminent church leaders: Bishop Tom Stanage, who unveiled a plaque marking the century since the laying of the foundation stone, the Archbishop of Cape Town, the Most Rev. Njongonkulu Ndungane, who convened an Episcopal Synod in Kimberley and consecrated new bishops in May, and the Bishops of St Helena, the Rt Rev. John Salt, and of Oxford, the Rt Rev. John Pritchard. The 12th Bishop of Kimberley and Kuruman, the Rt Rev. Oswald Swartz, was enthroned in June. A new Garden of Remembrance was dedicated by the Dean of Kimberley, the Very Rev. Fr Brian Beck.

Two longer-term centenary projects are under way. One is a further step towards completing the original plan for the building: the installation of a ring of bells in the tower to be dedicated to the memory of victims of the HIV/Aids pandemic. The other looks back to the historical role of St Cyprian’s in estab?lishing some of Kimberley’s earliest schools in the late nineteenth century, including Perseverance. As part of the Anglican Church’s plan to revive historical schools St Cyprian’s moves towards its new century taking active steps to bring its educational legacy to new birth.
