A group of American experts invaded Welkom. The eyes of 268 children from 150 schools in ten towns in the Lejweleputswa District were tested and, where necessary, spectacles were provided.

This outreach programme, which mainly focussed on disadvantaged children, was initiated by the Department of Education in conjunction with the Education Support Centre in Welkom.

Ms Helen Proctor says many pupils from farm schools benefited from the initiative.

The American team consisted of 13 members.

They first tested the children’s eyes and supplied them with glasses. Some of the children received two pairs of spectacles.

Several children were also referred to eye specialists.

“The children were not only asked health-related questions, but also questions about their emotional and spiritual needs.

“They also received reading material – mostly story books.”

According to Proctor they intend to extend the programme.
