Mother, daughter in court for human traffic
Acting on information the Thabong Organised Crime Unit swept on a house in Dagbreek, Welkom, arresting a mother and daughter for human trafficking. Eight women were held against their will at the house, which is situated at 3 Fairbain Street. The police also confiscated identity documents during the raid. Mrs Ronèl Eloff (41) and her daughter, Ms Chamone Godfrey (23), appeared in court on charges that range from human trafficking, to abduction, intimidation, assault, running a brothel, committing indecent deeds and inducing another person to commit a sexual offence. They were released on R5 000 bail and will appear in court again on 9 June. The two allegedly attracted their victims, aged between 18 and 30, by advertising in newspapers for job opportunities for bar ladies. When the applicants arrived, they realised that it was actually prostitution. The accused paid for the applicants’ travelling expenses to Welkom. On arrival they were placed in the Gemini Club, where they were never allowed to leave and they were strictly supervised. The eight women were put in a place of safety. Two are from Welkom and six from Gauteng. Arrangements were made for their transport. Members of the Thabong Organised Crime Unit, under the leader?ship of Supt. Abe Kolisang, made the break?through based on informa?tion given to them by a gospel singer at a local church. The women were only allowed to go to church on Sundays. This is where one of the woman told the singer that they were being held captive. He “hired” three of them for the night and took them to his parents’ house where the police were informed. The investigation is conducted by members of Thabong Organised Crime and Mrs Charmaine Labuschagne of the Welkom Sexual Offences Court. Women are warned not to fall for these bogus job opportunities, where the adverts do not include names and proper addresses. “Human trafficing is currently a worldwide problem and legislation to declare it a crime will soon be approved by parliament. Perpetrators will be procecuted,” says Supt. Abe Kolisang. Eloff and Godfrey are both represented by Mr Willem Lombard.
