Rapists jailed for 18 years
Two men who raped a 17-year-old girl in 2005 were recently sentenced by the Bloemfontein High Court. The case was investigated by Insp. Thabiso Twala of the Thabong Detective Services. Mohlolo Johannes Mokoena (22) and Molahlehi Samuel Mmatli (21) were both sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment. The rape occurred when the 17-year-old girl went looking for her relatives at a tavern. The girl was unsuccessful and was followed by the two males. She was hit on the forehead with a bottle and stabbed on one of her left hand fingers. Forced to a secluded open space she was raped by both men. While one suspect stayed with the victim the other went to the tavern to call his friends to the scene. The girl was raped again. The suspects left the girl and ran away. She went to the police to report the case. Five days after the incident Insp. Twala arrested all seven suspects. The case appeared in court on several occasions and the Welkom court only found two of the suspects guilty of this crime. Asst. Comm. Lerato Molale applauded the assigned inspector for a job well done. “We need dedicated and hardworking members like Insp. Twala who protect the dignity of the public by fighting crime to have a safe evironment for all. “This is a clear message that crime does not pay,” he said.
