Two sentenced for gang raping woman
A woman (19) was brutally raped by six men in 2005 while walking with her boyfriend. Six unknown men approached the woman with her boyfriend on their way from a tavern. This happened in Ndaki Street, Thabong. The boyfriend was beaten and ran away leaving his girlfriend with the suspects. She was taken to an open space between Thabong and Riebeeckstad. She was allegedly gang raped by the six suspects. Her boyfriend managed to call the police and took them to the place where he had left his girlfriend. As the police aproached the scene the five suspects fled, but one was still raping the woman. He tried to run away, but was caught while trying to get dressed. Det. Insp. Jacky Ledwaba investigated the case and the other five suspects were arrested. The suspects appeared in court on 5 May. Four of the suspects were acquitted. Their DNA did not match with that found on the scene of the crime. Only two of the suspects were sentenced. Mpumelelo Edward Ndinisa (29) was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment and Bongani Mathiso (19) was sentenced to 12 years. The prosecutor in this case was Ms Anna Lesenya. Asst. Comm. Mohale of Thabong SAPS commended Det. Insp. Jacky Ledwaba for his sterling performance. “The police will ensure that those who infringe on the rights and dignity of citizens will be taken to court to face the might of the law. The swift response of the members shows that our members are serious when it comes to fighting crime.”
