Mrs Yolandé Venter had just spoken to her husband on her cellphone when the men came out of nowhere and accosted her. The incident occurred just after 18:00 on Thursday.

“I screamed so loudly that even people in the underground parking heard me. The centre’s security did not respond. People who work at some of the other stores in the centre came to my assistance.”

Venter says shortly after her ordeal another tenant in the centre was attacked in the music store where she works, and then a woman who works at one of the clothing stores was attacked when she went to withdraw money.

Venter says three men were involved in all three incidents, and they occurred shortly after one another.

She says the women who work in the centre really feel unsafe after hours.

Mrs Norma Scott, manager of the Liberty-Sentrum, says she is aware of the incidents and the problem has been addressed.

“The centre has security guards available to escort people to their vehicles after hours. In fact, the guard was busy escorting someone to her car when the incident occurred. The tenants have been warned not to use certain doors after dark.

“Women especially must always be aware of their surroundings.”
