Mr Dan Motaung is a familiar face in Clarens and Kgubetswana and has been in the area for some time – 39 years to be exact. His involvement in community projects in Kgubetswana have proven his passion to see improvement in the quality of life of his people.

During his work as field ranger early in 2007 he’s been instrumental in the formation of the Traditional Healer’s Committee, a vital component in implementing sustainable resource management within the Clarens Bio-region Conservancy Area. At present he is an acting member of the Kgubetswana Conservancy and involved in the planning of a recycling project.

As a young man Motaung began his career as an assistant surveyor on the tunnel project of the Lesotho Higlands Water Project near Clarens. Thereafter he started working as a supervisor for the Working for Water team based at Golden Gate Highlands National Park from 1996 to 2000. The project deal?t with the eradication of alien invasive trees that placed increasing strain on the natural environment and decreasing available water in the catchment areas of the Caledon, Wilge and Jordaan River systems. Hundreds of hectares of invasive trees were cleared from the kloofs of Golden Gate and Qwaqwa Park area as far as Eerstegeluk farm on the nor?thern slopes of the Rooiberge. In 2002 and 2003 he also served as a police reservist.

These days Motaung keeps working on clearing alien invasive trees on farms in the Betlehem area through contracts with the Department of Water Affairs, but he is also a general builder, with a skilled team behind him to get the job done. Through his contracts with the Department of Water Affairs and as a general builder he has creat?ed many jobs over the years and still keeps doing so. He is married to Julia Matela and they have two children. His son lives in Lesotho.

And what would he like to say to the readers of Vrystaat?

“We must bring all peoples together through prayer and praising God. Without God, nothing is possible. The gifts of the Spirit is the only thing that can satisfy man’s desire in this world – He will give you joy! We must also help children off the streets through activities like sports.”
