Twelve people were killed and several others injured in vehicle accidents across KwaZulu-Natal at the weekend, the provincial transport department said on Monday.

"One major accident happened at Henley Dam, Edendale, on Saturday, where a bus collided with a car and left two people dead," it said in a statement.

Two people were killed and another seriously injured when a car overturned on the R103 in Estcourt, on Saturday.

In another accident on the N3 north, three people died in a head-on collision on Sunday.

The department did not provide details of the other accidents.

"This is quite alarming, that we lost so many lives in just one weekend, as the world prepares to have the United Nations Global Pedestrian Road Safety Week," MEC Willies Mchunu said in the statement.
