A 15-year-old has been using social media platforms to communicate with and be recruited by Islamic extremist group, ISIS

A 15-year-old girl who had run away from home was taken off a British Airways plane before she could fly off to Saudi Arabia to join ISIS on Monday.

The Capetonian teen disappeared from her home on Sunday morning and paperwork found in her room suggested she had been in contact with and recruited by islamic terrorist group ISIS.

Security Minister David Mahlobo revealed to eNCA that the girl had been using social media to communicate with her recruiters.

"The girl over the past period has been actually using technology, the social platforms, interacting with strange people and reading some material that suggested that she is actually getting an interest to join the terror group called ISIS,” Mahlohobo told the broadcaster.

Questions around how an unaccompanied minor had been able to book and check into the flight have been directed to British Airways and it seems that the girl needed a "responsible adult" and not neccesarily a guardian to check her in.

A myriad of other questions including how her airfare was paid are also being investigated by State Security.

"“But we are just doing a lot... in terms of investigation to see how did she get recruited so that she could leave the country, how the funding in terms of the airfare was being arranged, so that we can be able to get to the bottom of this,” Mahlobo concluded.
