The Top eight stylists of the Sofn’free HairXperts Master Challenge competed in the Grand Finale on Sunday, 16 July 2017 for the title of Sofn’free HairXpert,  and a whopping cash prize of R250 000. There were many other opportunities for contestants to win, with prizes being awarded for: Technical Excellence, Viewer’s Choice, Defy the Norm, and a YoungXpert for the best student stylist.

The one and only Somizi Mhlongo hosted this exhibition of avant-garde excellence. He entertained the audience with everything from fabulous hair and outfits to descending from the ceiling on a wire harness. In between Somizi’s flamboyant commentary and the stylists battling it out on stage with their hair masterpieces, the crowd was treated to high-energy, first-class performances by the V.I.N.T.A.G.E. dance crew, Amanda Black, and Kwesta. The crowd went wild for each performer, leaving their seats to dance and sing along.

Just before the winners were crowned, when the crowd thought the evening couldn’t offer anything else, a surprise announcement took the show to a new level. Sofn’free launched their brand new SALON Infusions - a revolutionary hair relaxer system, with four unique formulas designed so stylists can now offer individual solutions to suit their clients’ personal hair needs. This break-through technology is the first of its kind in South Africa.

After a jaw-dropping exhibition of skill and artistry, the contestants congregated on stage and the winners were finally announced. Nicole Pearce from PE Academy in Port Elizabeth was named the YoungXpert winner from all the student stylists. Out of all Top 18 HairXperts, Arthur Tlhalatsi from Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape  walked away the Viewer’s Choice winner. Doctor Sithole from Voslorus in Gauteng came out on top for the Technical Excellence award for displaying an unmatched level of skill. Khe Zondi from Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu Natal was awarded the Defy the Norm prize for excelling at avant-garde styling. Each of them received a cash prize of R30 000.

Finally, in a cloud of confetti and pyrotechnics, Treavor Mokoaleli from Bethlehem in the Free State was crowned the overall winner of the Sofn’free HairXperts Grand Finale and went home with R250 000 in cash. The audience stormed the stage, lifting Mokoaleli above the sea of people in celebration of his victory.
