People wearing red T-shirts bearing Chris Hani's face streamed into a marquee at a memorial park east of Johannesburg on Wednesday to commemorate the death of the SA Communist Party leader.

President Jacob Zuma was among those who arrived for the wreath-laying ceremony at the Thomas Titus Nkobi Memorial Park in Elspark, east of Johannesburg.

Many people sang struggle songs, and a red carpet was laid out. The cemetery was decked out in red and black banners on which Hani's face was printed.

The ANC and its alliance partners the SACP and the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) were paying tribute to Hani, who was shot dead by Polish right-winger Janusz Walus 20 years ago.

Zuma, SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande and Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi were expected to speak.

Hani's family was also expected to attend.

Hani was killed outside his house in Boksburg on April 10, 1993.
