40 years on: Buthelezi and the IFP

Now in his late 80s, Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi is still at the helm of the Inkatha Freedom Party after four decades. Here he reflects on his, and ?the party’s, achievements.

In one picture he is posing with former US President Jimmy Carter and former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. In other photos he is alongside African luminaries such as Zambia’s Kenneth Kaunda and Tanzania’s Julius Nyerere. And these are just a few snapshots from the life of one of South Africa’s veteran politicians.

We are here to visit Mangosuthu Buthelezi a few days after his Inkatha Freedom Party celebrated its 40th anniversary. In his spacious but simple office at the party’s headquarters in Ulundi, the great survivor readily recalls his life at the sharp end of South African politics.
