"This is exciting. I am looking forward to Africa coming together"- Salif Keita

The Department of Arts and Culture is bringing African countries close together. This is through the first ever Africa Month, that starts from the 1st of May. Speaking at the launch of the inaugural African Month campaign Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa said the campaign is set to open the doors of learning and culture from Cape to Cairo.

"Through Africa Month and the 'We Are Africa' festival we will  celebrate the arts and culture showing their contribution to the African economy and society," explained the Minister.

The launch was held at Freedom Park in Pretoria where some of Africa's biggest names in the arts attended. One such act was Mali muso Salif Keita who kept posing for pictures with fans throughout the night. He is part of the Reference Group of African artists who will take part in the various festivals during the month of May.

"This is exciting. I am looking forward to Africa coming together," he said.

Each Friday in May will be called Africa Friday where people will be encouraged to wear and do things that make them proudly South African.
