A childhood favourite for many.

Makes 14

Preparation time: 15 min

Cooking time: 5 min

125 ml (½ c) milk

250 ml (1 c) water

250 ml (1 c) flour

5 ml (1 t) ground allspice

10 ml (2 t) baking powder

15 ml (1 T) oil, extra oil for deep frying

60 ml (¼ c) smooth strawberry jam

125 ml (½ c) caster sugar

15 ml (1 T) ground cinnamon

1 Heat the milk and water in a small pot until just about boiling.

2 In a bowl combine the flour, allspice, baking powder and oil. Add the warm milk mixture and stir until well combined.

3 Allow the dough to rest while you heat the rest of the oil in a small pot on medium heat.

4 Shape the dough into round golf ball shapes and fry in hot oil in batches until golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on kitchen paper to drain any excess oil.

5 Using a sharp knife make a small hole in each fried ball. Place the jam in a plastic bag and pipe it into each ball. Mix the sugar and cinnamon, roll the balls in the mixture and serve.
