ANC needs to look at itself: Yacoob

The ruling African National Congress needs to take a long, hard look at itself if it wants to root out corruption in government, a retired Constitutional Court judge said, The Times reported on Tuesday.

"Unless the ANC looks deep [into] the corruption culture within itself, the problem will not go away," Zak Yacoob was quoted by The Times newspaper as saying at a lecture at the University of KwaZulu-Natal on Monday.

"The ANC as [the] government and ruling party needs to look inside itself if it wants to fight and win the battle against the scourge of corruption.''

It was of real concern that government was spending so much money on cases related to corruption.

Business also needed to take the blame for graft by government officials.

''Many people think that [the] government is corrupt. But the fact of the matter is that corruption is a two-way process.

''Let's start blaming business. They are the ones who start the process of giving money and government officials accepting it."

Government officials needed to change their ways, he said.

Yacoob retired from the Constitutional Court in January after serving his full 15-year term.

The Mercury newspaper quoted him saying that demands for the death penalty would do little to bring down the surge in violent crime.
