The ANC Youth League marked Reconciliation Day on Monday by placing a banner with a farewell message to former president Nelson Mandela on Shell-House, the previous headquarters of the ANC.

"December 16 is a day which we remember the formation of the people's army, Umkhonto WeSizwe with Nelson Mandela as commander-in-chief," said African National Congress Youth League spokesman Bandile Masuku in a statement..

"On this day, we call on all South Africans in particular young people to embrace reconciliation as a building-block towards a united, democratic, non-racial, non-sexist and prosperous South Africa."

The message on the banner read: "Madiba, a man of peace and reconciliation".

The organisation called on young South Africans to enjoy the summer holiday responsibly "and in a manner that promotes peaceful co-existence of all races and national groupings".

The ANCYL also commended government for the unveiling of a nine-meter high statue of Mandela at the Union buildings in Pretoria on Monday.
