The youth league said in a statement that it believes that the ANC has performed poorly in Gauteng metros, which is the economic hub of the country, and sees no need for celebrations.

“We will rather engage in drastic programme of rebuilding and strengthening structures and our support on the ground,” said the provincial ANCYL leadership.

It added that the current drop in municipal elections did not warrant a celebration.

The party has not been able to garner simple majorities in the Tshwane and Joburg metros, and has been overtaken by the DA in Tshwane. The ANCYL said the decline could still be reserved, as the low voter turnout particularly in our strongholds.

“It is clear that whilst the society is disappointed with us, they would rather not vote than to vote for opposition,” says Mkhize

The drop in electoral support hasn't stopped the ANC from celebrating in places like East London and Ethekwini, as the party usually does after victorious pollls.
