A survivor of rape herself, radio and TV personality Andile Gaelesiwe speaks up as an activist for change

She’s poised, calm and exudes confidence when she graces our screens on Wednesday nights. Khumbul’ekhaya presenter and anti-rape activist Andile Gaelesiwe (39) is the picture of a successful South African woman but beneath that professional persona is a woman who still sometimes wakes up in a sweat, crying because of the trauma she went through when she was raped many years ago.

Andile was raped twice before she was 20 years old and even though she believes she’s dealt with her demons, she says anything can trigger the memories.

“It can be someone’s cologne that brings back all those terrible memories,” she says, “or it could be a room that looks a certain way, or someone else’s story – someone who’s experienced the same thing.”
