Sir Paul McCartney is among many artists across the world who have lamented the loss of the gritty voiced singer who finally lost his battle with lung cancer.

The 70 year old singer began his career singing in pubs and clubs in Sheffield in the1960s and his music would later lead him to winning a Grammy and Academy award in the 1980s.

"I know him through the years as a good mate... He was a great guy, lovely guy who brought so much to the world and we'll miss him," Sir Paul continued.

The Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, singer/songwriter Frank Turner and Sony Entertainment cheif executive Edgar Berger have also sent their condolences to Joe's loved ones.

Details of the singer's funeral have not yet been revealed.
