Ask Sis Dolly: I want an abortion

I’m pregnant, but we agreed I should have an abortion, I want to finish my studies and not disappoint my mother

I’m a 20-year-old student, doing my second year at varsity.

I met my boyfriend two years ago and he was my first lover. When I moved to Cape Town to study, he became insecure and we fought verbally, but we’d make up again.

Now I’m pregnant, but we agreed I should have an abortion. I want to finish my studies and not disappoint my mother.

But a week after I returned to school, we had a physical fight.

He told me he no longer wants me to have an abortion and threatened to tell my family. I lied and said I went to the clinic and found out I’m not pregnant.

I still want to go ahead with the abortion, but feel bad.

What should I do?

It must be a heavy burden for you to go through this without support. You’ve been in an unsteady relationship for a while now and it’s about time you decide on what to do.

The decision whether or not to have the abortion rests with you alone. Remember, this can only be done within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

There are other options, like adoption, you can look into. But, as it is, you’re in no state to make any rational decision.

Seeing a counselor would be beneficial.

I suggest you call Lifeline on 0800-150-150 or Marie Stopes SA on 0800-117-785 for counselling and advice on protecting yourself for future sexual activity.
