Last December, I went to visit my boyfriend’s family and I saw a different side of him. He came home one day and I was alone there, so he started insulting me and calling me names.

After that, he beat me and told me I should go home because he wasn’t free when I was around. We haven’t spoken since then but recently he called and asked to see me. I’m confused.

Sis Dolly answers

You’ve seen his true nature before committing yourself further and you should thank your lucky stars. You don’t need someone in your life who physically abuses you.

What he did is inexcusable and there’s no justification for his behaviour. You can give him the benefit of the doubt and go see him to hear what he has to say for himself, but don’t forget what he put you through.

According to the Domestic Violence Act, you can safeguard yourself by applying for a protection order from your nearest Magistrate’s Court.

You can also call People Opposing Women Abuse (Powa) on 011-642-4345 for further advice.
