Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane shows us around her official residence and talks about issues close to her heart

HUGE gates swing open to reveal well-tended gardens, large trees and a magnificent home.  This is the official residence of Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane in Bryanston, northern Johannesburg.

Mokonyane has come under heavy fire for spending R3,2 million renovating this house but in truth it’s more an office than a home for her.

“I never feel like I’m at home here,” she explains. “It’s just where I host meetings with international visitors.”

It may not be home, but the house is decorated sumptuously. The decor is  luxurious and of the finest quality. The expansive rooms are decked out in tones of rich creams, earthy reds and deep yellows. Expensive landscape paintings hang on every wall.

“This is another workstation outside the office. It’s too big for a home. I am used to a house where people bump each other,” Mokonyane, who grew up with 11 siblings, says.

Answering her critics who question the pricey renovation to the property, the premier stresses that this is an important work venue where she hosts the province’s VIP guests.
