At home with Patrick Ndlovu

As soon as viewers hear a jazz tune on the SABC1 drama Zone 14 they know from past experience the action’s going to switch to the flamboyant Sizwe Moloi’s office.

And there’s a good reason for that: in his younger days Patrick ndlovu, the veteran actor who plays Ntate Moloi, used to be one of the best jazz drummers in South Africa.

The 70-something-year-old, who’s 40-year career has seen him landing roles in hit TV shows such as Gaz’Lam, Soul City, Generations and Isidingo, as well as in the movies Cry the Beloved

Country, Sarafina and Shaka – used to drum for the ’70s bebop outfit The Jazz Prophets.

And the man who fronted that band was none other than DRUM’s former showbiz reporter Bra Sidney Matlhaku.

“Sidney was my band leader,” says Patrick, his eyes growing moist. “I still have a soft spot for those days. We were barely out of our teens but I was a bloody good drummer, even if I say so myself.
