At home with Thabo Mdluli

En-route to his Benoni home we imagine a house filled with the usual trappings of a serious musician – a top-of-the-line synthesizer taking pride of place in the living room or the mandatory gleaming baby grand piano.

It’s therefore with some surprise that we arrive at a comfortable home that bears no reference to this artist’s work.

The only concession to Thabo Mdluli’s passion is a CD stand in the corner of his entertainment room.

“It would be nice to have one of my synths here,” Thabo (33) says as he takes a seat.

“But I keep the bulk of my music equipment in Bryanston, where I work from most of the time. But I must admit I’m keen on the idea of having a baby grand in the living room.

“I need it for my little boy. He’s taken a liking to music so I should get one for him.” The crooner lives in a Tuscan-style house overlooking a valley in Atlasville, eastern Johannesburg.

The four-bedroom home with its genteel surroundings is a refuge for Thabo, his wife, Nonhlanhla (32), and their sons, Thando (8) and Musa (6).

“We moved here six years ago,” says Nonhlanhla. “I’m a quiet-loving person and this is far away from the showbiz noise. I guess it’s a bit different of us to have chosen eastern Joburg because everyone in showbiz lives in the north.”
