Axed Generations actors support boycott

The most effective medicine is the most bitter- Generations actors.

After Cosatu through its secretary General Zwelinzima Vavi came out on the 9th of September asking viewers to start boycotting Generations from the 15th of September, the 16 fired actors have also joined Cosatu in support of the boycott. The Generations Actors Guild spoke to DRUM;

What do you feel about Cosatu’s plea to the public to boycott Generations?

We deeply appreciate the support from Cosatu, and are gratified that our struggle is being understood as a workers issue, a labour issue, that necessitates urgent action.

What is the intention of the boycott? Do you feel this will make your demands heard and addressed?

First question is better answered by Cosatu/Communications Workers Union, since they initiated it. As actors, we feel that it's a powerful way to send out an important message about the industry, and the fact that it needs to change. We're not anticipating that this will happen overnight, but we agree with Cosatu that a strong gesture must be made.

 You said at Generations Actors Guild press conference that all of you love the show; doesn’t this boycott seem like a sabotage of something you claim to love?

The action of withdrawing our services, and newly-announced ‘switch off campaign' are both actions to address issues we have with the way Generations has been run. Yes, we love the show – we are a major part of it, after all - but there are many things that aren't right that need to be fixed – and that isn't necessarily going to be a pleasant or easy process. As they say, sometimes the most effective medicine is the most bitter.

 How far are the negotiations between you and SABC?

These are ongoing, and we're not in a position to make any comment beyond that at this stage.

Actors who are part of the Guild are: Anga Makubalo (MJ Dlomo), Atandwa Kani (Samora Lembede), Katlego Danke (Dineo Dlomo), Mandla Gaduka (Selwyn ‘Choppa’ Maithufi), Menzi Ngubane (Sbusiso Dlomo), Nambitha Mpumlwana (Mawande , Patrick Shai (Patrick Tlaole), Slindile Nodangala  (Ruby Dikobe), Sophie Ndaba (Queen Ndaba), Seputla Sebogodi (Kenneth Mashaba), Thami Mngqolo (Senzo ) , Thato Molamu (Nicholas Nomvete ) , Winnie Ntshaba (Khetiwe Buthelezi), Zenande Mfenyana (Noluntu Memela), Zikhona Sodlaka (Priska Nomvete) , Zolisa Xaluva (Jason Malinga ).
