A man accused of raping a 6-week-old baby abandoned his application for bail in the Kimberley Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said.

NPA Northern Cape spokesperson Mashudu Malabi said the 24-year-old, who cannot be named as he has not yet pleaded, refused legal representation.

The matter was postponed to 12 February.

The man, believed to be the baby's uncle, allegedly raped the child on 25 November.

The baby was admitted to hospital where she received intensive care.

She underwent an operation and was referred to the Universitas Academic Hospital in Bloemfontein, where she was in a stable condition.
