Try fish and chips at home – it’s really easy

Serves: 4-6

6 hake fillets

salt and freshly ground pepper

375 ml (1½ c) self-raising flour, extra for dusting

250 ml (1 c) ginger ale

oil, for deep frying

  1. Season the fish with salt and pepper and dust lightly in flour.
  2. Sift the flour into a large bowl. Whisk in the ginger ale to form a thick batter; it should coat the back of a wooden spoon.
  3. Thickly coat the fish in the batter. Heat the oil and fry the fish fillets for 5 minutes on each side. Remove from the pan and drain on a paper towel. Serve with chips.
