Bexx and Adams: was it rape?

POWA has come out in support of the eviction of Adams following reports that he raped fellow housemate, Bexx

Women's rights organization People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA) say they support the eviction of Adams from the Big Brother house following a rape allegation.

Although the reality television programme has not come out to say that it was indeed rape, viewers have taken to social media platforms to voice their opinion on the situation; some say it was rape while some say it was consensual.

It is agreed though, that the alleged victim Bexx, born Axola Mbengo, was inebriated when she was with Adams, Siyanda Ngwenya, when the incident occurred.

Jeanette Sera, the counselling services manager from POWA thinks that Bexx's conditions should bear no weight in the importance of what is believed to have happened to her.

"It doesn't matter if the person is drunk, you cannot take advantage of them or sexually abuse them," Sera told DRUM.

"When two adults engage in sexual acts, it should be per agreement from both parties. If the person does not give consent, then their decision should be respected and they have the right to walk away blameless," she comments.

Sera also wholly supports the programme's decision to expel Ngwenya from the house.

"This shows that the show is not just about entertainment but that it is also open to important issues. Especially in a country where cases of sexual assault are so rampant," she states. "I hope this eviction creates awareness that men should always ask for permission and that a woman's body is not an object. And also that excuses like, 'she was drunk or that she didn't protest enough' should not be reason to disrespect a woman's body," she adds. American anti-sexual assault organisation, Rape, Abuse, Incest National Network (RAINN) states on its site that both participants involved in a sexual act have to be aware of what they are getting themselves into. "If you were so drunk or drugged that you passed out and were unable to consent, it was rape. Both people must be conscious and willing participants," the site says.

Bexx and Adams  have not commented on the speculations and reports on the issue as yet.
