“It’s not just about worship as we’ll pray for peace and safety on the road."

In the latest DRUM issue, Sipho Makhabane alias Big Fish speaks at length about his Peace and Unity MaAfrica gig - an annual concert whose impressive bill boasts crowd pleasers such as Joyous Celebration and the esteemed Rebecca.

In essence, the event’s aim is to address xenophobia and road safety. The idea is that fans and artists will meet and pray for peace and unity.

“It’s not just about worship as we’ll pray for peace and safety on the road,” Sipho said.

Heeding the call and joining Sipho on the initiative is RTMC (Road Traffic Management Corporation) whose mission is to insure safe, secure and responsible use of roads in South Africa.

Said Mpho Mokhantso who is the divisional head for safety at RTMC: “What informed our involvement in Peace and Unity concert is the scourge in our roads. We have a high number of people dying on the roads. Chief amongst the reasons why we have these accidents is people’s attitudes. That is, behaviour of road users that result in road rage for example.

“Our mission is to ensure safe, secure and responsible use of roads in South Africa through education. In doing that we’ve partnered in this instance with people like Sipho Makhabane to convey safety awareness to the revellers and using the concert as a platform to educate people about road safety and being responsible road users.”
