Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande has been discharged from hospital after he was admitted with a bout of flu on Wednesday, said his spokeswoman Vuyelwa Qinga.

The minister was hospitalised after he addressed the congress of the National Union of Mineworkers of SA (Numsa) in Durban.

The Young Communist League of SA (YCLSA) wished the minister a speedy recovery, national spokesman Mangaliso Khonza said in a statement.

"We wish him a speedy recovery so that he can return to his duty of leading the working class party and leading us to the realisation of the South African road to socialism," said Khonza.

It was unclear whether Nzimande will take time off from his job.
