Bongi Dube - A natural talent

For some people Bongi Dube will always be remembered as the daugther of slain reggae legend Lucky Dube. But for those who know this songbird’s talent, she’s a star in her own right.

And, unlike many entertainers, she started a singing career by chance. Bongi tells us about singing along to The Corrs, swimming and chilling with her boyfriend.

Was a career in showbiz a dream for you?

Not really, it just jumped out in front of me.

Tell us how you got into the industry?

I sang at school and in choirs and got a call from a guy, Bheki Dlamini, out of the blue. He’d heard me sing and wanted me to put vocals on a track he was doing for Gagasi FM.

I dropped into the studio and did You Can Stay and it landed up on DJ Bongz’ album. So a second track was done for the radio compilation Ngifuna Wena. Both songs were hits, so I pretty much went to bed and woke up.
