Brian Molefe, has been sworn in as a Member of Parliament today amid rumours that he is in line to take over either from Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan or Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas.

Former Eskom CEO,

According to News 24, at a press briefing ahead of his budget speech, Gordhan said the decision to “deploy’ or “redeploy” was solely that of President Jacob Zuma.

However, he warned against messing with key institutions.

Over the years, Molefe had established himself as a reputable leader; however, news of him becoming an MP raised concern.

Molefe’s problems began when his image was tainted in the State of Capture Report by the former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela.

It was found that Molefe had made numerous phone calls to Saxonwold, the suburban area where the Gupta’s home is located.

The implication was that he was involved in corrupt practices in the relationship between Eskom and the Gupta family business Optimum Coal Mine from Glencore.

During a press briefing the following day after the report was released, Molefe broke down in tears, defended himself, insisted that he is not corrupt and raised concern that his image had been tainted.

In the State of Capture report, Jonas admitted to being offered a bribe of R600 billion to take over as finance minister when Nhlanhla Nene was fired in 2015.
