Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo almost missed his wedding when he was arrested on Good Friday for driving over the speed limit.

As the goal minder rushed to prepare for his wedding on Friday, he was stopped and arrested for speeding.

Mhlongo was arrested for doing 173km/h in a 120km/h zone. He however denies claims that he was drunk, citing that he was rushing to sort out preparations for his wedding that was due to take place in Protea Glen on Saturday.

Brighton was getting married to his fiancée, Dimakatso Marene.

“I was getting married over the weekend, so I was not in a good state of mind because I wanted to sort things out quickly, rush, rush,” he said.

Speaking to a News24, Brighton was remorseful for his actions. “All I can say to the public is that I was wrong. It is very bad, especially when it is done by us young stars. We are supposed to be role models and obviously we lost players due to accidents… I am very sorry for my actions, I have learnt from this mistake,” the goalkeeper said.

Although he got to marry the love of his life, he is due to appear in the Brixton Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
