Cabinet condemns panties display

The display of women's underwear during a teachers' strike last week was "anarchic", Cabinet said on Thursday.

While the Constitution allowed protests, these should be within the confines of the law and with dignity, said Performance, Monitoring and Evaluation Minister Collins Chabane.

"The insults during the recent SA Democratic Teachers' Union (Sadtu) protest directed at the minister of education, and the display of women's underwear whilst protesting, reflects total disregard for women and were unwarranted," he said.

In protests held in Pretoria and Cape Town, Sadtu called on Motshekga to resign.

"South Africans fought long and hard for our democracy, and we should therefore disassociate ourselves from socially reprehensible conduct which is tantamount to anarchy," said Chabane.
