It’s a scorching hot afternoon when we head over to the Indaba Hotel, Spa & Conference Centre in Fourways, north of Joburg, to meet the Idols SA season 8 winner Khaya Mthethwa.

He calls ahead of time to tell us he’s snarled in traffic and will be a bit late. When he arrives, he pulls up in the latest Mercedes Benz C-Class C180 – cool wheels he can now afford after his album, The Uprising, has gone platinum. Clad in a grey T-shirt, grey tracksuit pants and takkies, he looks as cool as a cucumber. Since winning Mzansi’s most coveted singing competition in 2012, life has treated this multi-talented muso well. He’s released his album, bought property in two cities and became an ordained pastor.
