Career: Electrical Engineer

This electrical engineer specialises in electrical design and works for a mining cosultancy.

He writes reports, attends meetings and checks his e-mailfor updates on his instructions. But Kenneth Mahuma’s job comes alive when he gets down to the nitty-gritty of being an electrical engineer. Kenny (38), as he is known, is a lead electrical designer at SRK Consulting in Illovo, which is an independent, international mining consultancy that specialises in mining projects and providing advice and solutions to clients, mainly from the earth and water resource industries.

His day-to-day job involves doing designs of single line diagrams, writing reports, doing electrical cost estimates, and electrical load and cable size calculations. He also visits mines at least twice a month to carry out inspections and then compiles competent person’s reports and due diligence reports.

He also sometimes does safety audits.“There are a lot of different aspects to my work, including doing designs of the mine’s surface and underground reticulation, producing electrical load lists in order to calculate transformer sizes, doing single line and wiring diagrams, calculating cable racking sizes and cable racking and routing layouts, doing lighting and small power design and layouts and controlling budget estimates.”
