CD: Walter Beasley - Backatcha

Rating: 4/5

It’s not so much the saxophonist – who, by the way, is a profound player – that makes this record such a hit: Walter Beasley could struggle along on a flat Chinese-made piece of tin but crack producer Chris “Big Dog” Davis would still make him sound impressive.

He’s one of the most prolific smooth jazz saxophonists.

The bulk of the album is interpretations of classic R&B hits by Bill Withers, The Five Stairsteps and Smokey Robinson. Look out for Stan Vincent’s O-o-h Child.
