Bloemfontein Celtic beat defending champions Orlando Pirates by a narrow 1-0 margin in a league fixture at the Free Stadium on Sunday.

The hosts' striker Lennox Bacela scored the all-important goal in the 77th minute of the game, firing past Bucs keeper Moeneeb Josephs with a brilliant volley from Limbikani Mzana's pass. The morale-boosting win for Celtic ended Pirates' good run of two wins since coach Roger de Sa took over.

Celtic were reeling from their 2-1 shock defeat to rookies Chippa United in a mid week game played in Cape Town.

Pirates have themselves to blame for the defeat after dominating the game and creating scoring chances, which their strikers failed to convert.

As early as the first minute, Bucs' striker Thulasizwe Mbuyane challenged Celtic's keeper Patrick Tignyemb but the shot went wide.

In the third minute of the game Ruzaigh Gamaldien's powerful shot was easily dealt with by Josephs.

As the game progressed Pirates exceted more pressure, cracking Cleitc's defense. In the 33th Mbuyane nearly broke the deadlock but his shot hit the woodwork with the keeper well-beaten.

The game continued with Pirates in the driving seat, but Oupa Manyesa, Sfiso Myeni and Mbuyane squandered goal scoring chances to give Bucs the lead before the break. They fired on the path of the keeper Tignyemb who parried for a corner and made good saves.

Pirates were the first to substite, taking off roving striker Tlou Segolela for the bulky striker Collins Mbesuma, who failed to make a difference. Additional chances by Rudfolf Bester and Ndumiso Mabena also failed to change the game Bucs way.
